It’s tough to imagine an actor like Gary Oldman having the time to lament the end of a franchise. Not only did Oldman star in three 2011 releases, but he also returned to bring his Kung Fu Panda character, Shen, back to life for the sequel. On the horizon in 2012? The Dark Knight Rises, of course, which is the final piece of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. While promoting his latest film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Oldman admitted, “It’s nice to be done,” adding, “But at the same time, it’s a little sad to see it come to an end.” As for Nolan, Oldman suggests he likely feels the same way, but, “I think he’s done with Batman.”

On the bright side, according to Oldman the trilogy will go out with a bang come July 20th, 2012 courtesy of the film’s story. When asked what’ll make this installment stand out from the previous two films, Oldman explained, “I’d like to think that Chris Nolan is too smart and too classy to actually just make a third for the sake of making it. He’s not that kind of guy and he really wanted to get the story right and I think it’s epic. It’s fantastic.” He continued, “And the way he sort of echoes the first, of Batman Begins, and the way he’s sort of put them in.”

While we’re all counting down the days until The Dark Knight Rises finally arrives, Oldman is busy planning his upcoming slate, which according to recent rumors may include the live-action Akira. Sadly, Oldman said no, he is not officially portraying The Colonel yet and laughed, “It gets around, doesn’t it?” That it does, especially when it comes to an immensely talented, high-profile actor coming aboard a highly-anticipated new film based on a very popular property. While Oldman most certainly wasn’t confirming or even hinting at his official involvement in the slightest, there was still a sense that a contract could be a possibility in the future.

Check out the transcript of everything Oldman had to say about The Dark Knight Rises and Akira below and be sure to keep an eye out for our full interview with the Tinker Tailor Solider Spy star soon.

The beauty of a franchise is that it gives moviegoers more of what they love, more of the same, but what is it that’ll make The Dark Knight Rises stand out from the first two films in Christopher Nolan’s series?

The story - yeah. I’d like to think that Chris Nolan is too smart and too classy to actually just make a third for the sake of making it. He’s not that kind of guy and he really wanted to get the story right and I think it’s epic. It’s fantastic. I think the story is just gonna – and the way he sort of echoes the first, of Batman Begins, and the way he’s sort of put them in. It concludes the trilogy, so it’s nice to finish, but it’s also a little sad. And I said, “This is the end, Chris. Gordon, like a cop, you know? We’re retiring.” And he said, “Yeah, unless of course you wanna go and haul your ass down the fourth.” It’s nice to be done. I think he would say the same as well. I think he’s done with Batman. But at the same time, it’s a little sad to see it come to an end.

But then again, that makes room for new projects. Maybe Akira? Is anything official on that?

None of that is, no. It gets around, doesn’t it?

Very quickly! And then I hear it over and over again and I get curious and, here I am!

[Laughs] Yeah, no. None of that’s confirmed yet.
