It's no brilliant or profound observation to point out that movie studios are busy raiding the realms of pop culture nostalgia, planning films based on old video games, toys and even board games. With each announcement, internet writers and commenters are supposed to be increasingly furious about the lack of new ideas in Hollywood, but personally, we're thrilled about this latest news: A movie based on the classic monster arcade game "Rampage."

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog picked up the story, announcing that the new flick will be produced by John Rickard, "who has acted as a co-producer on a wide range of New Line movies from 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' and 'Final Destination' to 'Horrible Bosses' and next year's tentpole 'Jack the Giant Killer.'" Rickard is said to already be talking with writers about the movie.

So, why are we excited? It's not because we're huge "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Final Destination" fans (though we did dig "Horrible Bosses"), but rather because "Rampage" has an absolutely killer concept. Three dudes get turned into three monsters: A giant Godzilla-esque thing, a giant King Kong-esque thing, and because why the balls not, a giant werewolf. They then proceed to destroy cities and fight the army. Get a viking in there somewhere and it's everything that's good in life all rolled up into one big explosive CGI-heavy summer action movie. What's not to love?

Heat Vision describes New Line's desire to "make a smartly-budgeted monster movie in the vein and tone of 'Ghostbusters' and 'Independence Day'." We're not exactly sure that what means (something that's simultaneously intentionally AND unintentionally hilarious?), but it's going to have a giant werewolf, so we're willing to see where it goes.

Are you as psyched as we are for the "Rampage" movie? Tell us in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter.
